US 82 West Widening Clears Design Phase: TxDOT Identifies Construction Funding for the Paris Approach

4 min read

The US 82 West corridor from the Fannin County line to Loop 286 is designed as a four-lane divided highway and construction funding has been identified. That moves Lamar County's western gateway from proposal toward build.

TxDOT's project page for the US 82 widening in Lamar County now lists the design for the roughly 16-mile corridor that runs from the Fannin County line to Loop 286 west of Paris, and it identifies construction funding for the project. The corridor is being converted from a two-lane highway into a four-lane divided route, the same treatment already underway or funded on US 271 to the north and the Loop 286 freeway conversion to the northeast.

The published design from CR 23900 to Loop 286 adds two 12-foot lanes in each direction, a 10-foot outside shoulder, and a 16-foot continuous left-turn lane, with a sidewalk on the south side within Paris city limits. That continuous turn lane is a meaningful detail for commercial frontage: it lets cross traffic and driveway access move without stopping the through lanes, which is the geometry that supports safe retail and industrial entries along a divided corridor.

Why the west approach matters

Most of Paris's visible commercial growth has clustered on the loops and the Lamar Avenue and North Main corridors. The US 82 West segment is the quieter side of that picture, but it is the direct route west toward Bonham and the DFW metroplex, and it intersects the Loop 286 ring at the city's southwest corner. Four-laning it shortens and smooths the drive for commuters, freight, and shoppers, and it raises the ceiling on how many vehicles a day can reach businesses on the west edge of the county.

For commercial investors, the funded widening is the kind of public commitment that shows up in lease underwriting over time. Improved access expands the effective trade area, supports new pad sites along the corridor, and reinforces the argument that Paris's growth is being planned, not just happening. The design and funding milestone does not put construction crews on the ground yet, but it is the clearest signal yet that the project is on the state's delivery schedule.

The regional picture

US 82 West sits inside a wider TxDOT Paris District program: the Northeast Loop 286 freeway conversion is fully funded at just over $152 million with construction slated for September 2027, and the US 271 widening in Red River County picked up about $29.3 million in FY 2026 construction funding. Each project extends the same four-lane, median-divided geometry that most Texas trade corridors already run on, which keeps Paris competitive when site selectors and tenants compare drive times and freight access against neighboring markets.

The takeaway for a property like 1905 E Price St is indirect but real. Access improvements drive the long-term demand curve for commercial space across the county, and centrally located flex buildings benefit most when every corridor in the region improves at once. The property sits near downtown, shopping, and the medical centers, on the inside of the ring that all four of these corridor projects feed.
