TxDOT Launches Sidewalk Project on BU 271 North Main Street

3 min read

Sidewalks are not glamorous. But when a state transportation agency spends $727,000 to install them on a business route through a commercial district, it means the corridor's pedestrian activity has reached the level that justifies public investment in walkability.

TxDOT has awarded a $727,000 contract to Highway 19 Construction for sidewalk repair and installation on BU 271 (North Main Street) in Paris, Texas. The project scope covers the corridor from Price Street to Martin Luther King Drive, with construction expected to be completed in 2026. Temporary lane and shoulder closures will be required during the work.

BU 271, also known as North Main Street, runs through one of Paris's established commercial and residential corridors. The sidewalk improvement project addresses pedestrian accessibility gaps that have existed along the route, connecting the corridor to ADA-compliant standards and creating a safer, more walkable environment for the businesses, residents, and visitors who use it daily.

Walkability and commercial property value

Commercial property research consistently shows that walkable corridors command higher lease rates and attract stronger tenants than auto-only environments. Pedestrian infrastructure increases foot traffic, extends the time visitors spend in a commercial district, and supports the kind of neighborhood-oriented businesses — restaurants, cafes, boutique retail, and professional services — that thrive on spontaneous visits.

The TxDOT sidewalk project on North Main Street complements the City of Paris's own street improvement efforts, including the $2 million repaving project and the SE 1st Street downtown revitalization. Together, these investments signal a coordinated approach to making Paris's commercial corridors more accessible, more attractive, and more valuable — improvements that benefit every property within walking distance.
