US 271 Widening: Construction Begins on Four-Lane Expansion
When TxDOT commits to widening a highway from two lanes to four, it means the traffic volume, freight demand, and regional growth have crossed the threshold that justifies a multi-year, multimillion-dollar state investment.
TxDOT has begun construction on the US 271 widening project, converting the highway from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided corridor from Loop 286 in Paris to SH 37 in Bogata. The project spans Lamar and Red River Counties and passes through Paris, Pattonville, Deport, and Bogata, creating a continuous four-lane connection between Paris and the broader Northeast Texas highway network.
Environmental reviews were completed in 2024, and construction began in spring 2026. The project represents one of the most significant highway infrastructure investments in Lamar County in over a decade, complementing the US 75 reconstruction and the US 82 median improvements already underway.
Why the widening matters for Paris
US 271 is the primary north-south corridor connecting Paris to Bogata, Deport, and eventually the Oklahoma border. The current two-lane configuration creates bottlenecks for commercial vehicles, school buses, and daily commuters. Widening to four lanes doubles capacity, reduces travel times, and makes the corridor safer for the freight trucks that serve Paris's growing manufacturing base — including Huhtamaki, Rodgers Wade, Delco Trailers, and Fusion Manufacturing.
For commercial property investors, highway widening is one of the most reliable leading indicators of future development. TxDOT does not invest hundreds of millions of dollars in road capacity unless the projected traffic growth justifies it. The US 271 widening signals that Lamar County's population, employment, and freight volumes are expected to grow meaningfully over the next two decades — growth that will drive demand for commercial space, housing, and services.
The infrastructure trifecta
The US 271 widening joins two other major TxDOT projects in the Paris District: the US 75 reconstruction and widening from the Collin County Line to FM 902, and the US 82 median and turn lane installation from 33rd Street to 42nd Street. Together, these three projects are reshaping the regional transportation network that supports Paris's commercial corridors, industrial parks, and residential neighborhoods.
The combined effect is a city with significantly improved road capacity, safety, and connectivity — a city that can handle more trucks, more commuters, and more growth without the congestion that limits commercial development in smaller markets. For 1905 E Price St, the US 271 widening improves access from the north and east, connecting the property to a larger labor pool, broader customer base, and the regional logistics network that makes Lamar County increasingly competitive.
