US 82 Lamar Avenue Safety Project: Raised Center Median Coming to Paris Commercial Corridor
Lamar Avenue carries the highest traffic counts in Paris and serves as the city's primary retail corridor. A raised center median will improve safety, slow traffic, and make the commercial strip more accessible for pedestrians and customers.
TxDOT is constructing a raised center median and turn lanes on US 82 (Lamar Avenue) from 33rd Street to 42nd Street in Paris, one of the busiest commercial stretches in all of Lamar County. The project improves safety by separating opposing lanes of traffic, reducing head-on collision risk, and providing designated turn lanes to prevent backup and congestion at key intersections.
The segment between 33rd Street and 42nd Street is the heart of Paris's retail corridor. It includes major shopping centers, national chain stores, restaurants, and service businesses that draw customers from across the region. Traffic counts on this stretch of Lamar Avenue are the highest in the county, reflecting Paris's role as the commercial hub for Northeast Texas. The median installation responds to traffic volume that has outgrown the previous undivided configuration.
Safety and accessibility improvements
Undivided four-lane highways with no median are among the most dangerous road configurations, particularly in commercial areas where drivers are frequently turning across traffic to access parking lots and businesses. The raised median eliminates the most dangerous turning movements — left turns across oncoming traffic — by channeling drivers to designated turn lanes and signalized intersections.
For pedestrians, the median also creates a refuge island at crosswalks, reducing exposure to traffic and making it safer to cross the corridor. For businesses, the improved safety profile and reduced congestion make the corridor more attractive for customers and tenants alike.
Why it matters for commercial real estate
Street-level infrastructure improvements on a primary commercial corridor directly affect property values and lease demand. A safer, more organized street with dedicated turn lanes improves the customer experience, reduces traffic friction, and makes the corridor more pleasant to navigate. For commercial property owners, these improvements translate into higher foot traffic, stronger tenant retention, and better long-term appreciation prospects.
The median project on Lamar Avenue is particularly relevant for 1905 E Price St, which sits just blocks north of the Lamar Avenue commercial corridor. The property's dual road frontage on Price Street and the adjacent street network connects it to the same traffic flows that the median improvements aim to manage. As Lamar Avenue becomes more organized and accessible, the blocks immediately adjacent to it gain value.
Part of a wider US 82 investment
The median project on Lamar Avenue is one of three active TxDOT initiatives on the US 82 corridor in Lamar County. The simultaneous investment in safety, capacity, and connectivity on a single highway corridor underscores the state's commitment to Paris's continued growth.
